If you’re new to internet marketing, you may be a calf trudging a new path for others you know to follow. You may have come across some free information about affiliate programs that you want to share with family and friends.
Before you can earn money through making a website about any product or service, it is important to know what affiliate programs can do for you to earn money.
As an affiliate you are simply making a referral to people who come across your website through a Google search or you advertising your website. You are directing contacts to engage with a product or service available through the internet.
Oftentimes the incentive is a percentage of the sale. It is cheaper for a company to have an affiliate share their feelings about a product or service and pay commissions on the sale than it is for companies to pay for advertising.
How Companies Benefit from Word of Mouth Marketing
Word of Mouth Marketing has many secrets but at the core:
Companies benefit when someone uses their product or service and shares the benefits to newcomers. Affiliates can persuade newcomers to buy product or service they endorse easier than the company can.
Many times people come to the internet to learn more about a product or service they have heard about through the radio or seen on TV or in a magazine. Once they are interested in it, they need more free information before they can buy.
When people are interested in buying something, they want to know free information about why other people have bought the product or service. They want to know why people are satisfied with it and why they should buy it.
What Is a Newcomer’s Basic Need?
Newcomers want to know that this product or service will solve a problem. The best word of mouth marketing comes from people who have bought it and know that it has solved a problem for them.
The concept of a referral is just sharing experience about a product or service and telling others how it has helped them. Sometimes companies hire actors to portray excitement about the product or service which appears fake.
They will spend a lot of money coming up with persuasive language to get a customer to buy their product or service. However, the best sale is one that comes from an organic customer who has tried the product or service and likes it very much, enough to share it with others who have their same problem.
Many companies go to great lengths to acquire testimonials from customers who are satisfied with their product or service. They are the best persuaders towards a sale. There is a difference between ad copy explaining the benefits of a product or service than a testimonial telling a story that appeals to newcomer’s emotions which persuades them to buy.
In the following poem a calf starts a journey that eventually becomes a highway only because others followed a curved path that led to finding what they needed. It explains the power of word of mouth marketing.
The Calf-Path by Sam Walter Foss, 1895
One day through the primeval wood
A calf walked home, as good calves should;
But made a trail all bent askew,
The Crooked Trail as all calves do.
Since then 300 years have fled,
And I infer the calf is dead
But still he left behind his trail,
And thereby hangs my moral tale.
The trail was taken up next day
By a lone dog that passed that way;
And then a wise Bellwether sheep
Pursue the trail o’er hill and glade
Through those old woods a path was made.
And many men wound in and out
And dodged and turn and bent about
And uttered words of righteous wrath
Because ‘twas such a crooked path;
But still they followed—do not laugh—
The first migrations of that calf,
And through this winding wood-way stalked
Because he wobbled when he walked.
This forest path became a lane
That bent and turned and turned again;
This crooked lane became a road,
Where many a horse with his load
Toiled on beneath the burning sun,
And traveled some three miles in one.
And thus a century-and-a-half
They trod the footsteps of that calf.
The years passed on in swiftness fleet,
The road became a village street;
And this, before men were aware,
A city’s crowded thoroughfare.
And soon the central street was this
Of a renowned metropolis;
And men two centuries and a half,
Trod in the footsteps of that calf.
Each day a hundred thousand rout
Followed this zigzag calf about
And o’er his Crooked journey went
The traffic of a continent.
A hundred thousand men were led
By one calf near three centuries dead.
They followed still his crooked way,
And lost one hundred years a day;
For thus such reverence is lent
To well-established precedent.
A moral lesson this might teach
Were I ordained and called to preach;
For men are prone to go it blind
Along the calf-paths of the mind,
And work away from sun to sun,
To do what other men have done.
They follow in the beaten track,
And out and in, and forth and back,
And still their devious course pursue,
To keep the path that others do.
They keep the path a sacred groove,
Along which all their lives they move.
But how the wise old wood gods laugh,
Who saw the first primeval calf.
Ah, many things this tale might teach—
But I am not ordained to preach.
Building a Website Utilizing the Calf-Path Philosophy
You can build a website that features affiliate programs you have joined. Your websites can earn money when newcomers click on your links for free information about a product and service and buy it..
You are providing the leads for a company and they are providing an easy way for the newcomer to buy their product or service.
Building a website consists of writing a testimonial or review about the products that you feel are noteworthy. The easiest way to do this is to be using the product or service already.
Don’t fall into the trap of building a website based only on the fact that your referral will generate large commissions. Your free information will be taken more seriously if you are making a recommendation to a newcomer based on the fact you like the product or service and explaining why.
The best recommendations have excitement about the product or service and list all the benefits of buying it. It’s hard to sell something that you don’t use. When you’re building your niche website it makes sense to make it around products or services you use everyday.
My Testimonial on an Affiliate Program I Use Everyday
I am using a service to help build this website and another for my home-based business. The main benefit of this service is that it has a community of affiliate marketers that talk to each other about how they use the service. You are not left in the dark about what the program has to offer.
Wealthy Affiliate (WA) provides step-by-step lessons that are easy to follow if you don’t have a degree or no experience in technology. It is free to start this program and you will build a website in the beginning lessons.
Most important, you will make goals about how much you want to earn from your niche website and how much time you are willing to dedicate to the program. Then you are taught how to interact with the community while you are building your first website. I have had a Premium membership for less than a month and have this website up and running, adding blogs regularly.

Most affiliate programs expect you to follow their path to success by the letter. With WA you are given the instructions on how to build a website that is searchable by Google and you determine which products or services you are interested in promoting.
You can talk about your products or services you endorse, because you are building your own niche website not just promoting a plan that may be complicated for a newcomer to follow.

It can take several visits before someone is convinced that your product is the right one. By building a website that features a blog that explains the benefits of your product or services, then there’s always the option that a newcomer will build trust with you after reading your blogs.
